They brought a woman from the street And made her sit in the stalls By threats By bribes By flattery Obliging her to share a little of her life with actors
But I don't understand art
Sit still, they said
But I don't want to see sad things
Sit still, they said
And she listened to everything Understanding some things But not others Laughing rarely, and always without knowing why Sometimes suffering disgust Sometimes thoroughly amazed And in the light again, said
If that's art I think it is hard work It was beyond me So much beyond my actual life
But something troubled her Something gnawed her peace And she came a second time, armoured with friends
Sit still, she said
And again, she listened to everything This time understanding different things This time untroubled that some things Could not be understood Laughing rarely but now without shame Sometimes suffering disgust Sometimes thoroughly amazed And in the light again said
This is art, it is hard work And one friend said, too hard for me And the other said, if you will I will come again Because I found it hard I felt honoured
SO pleased everyone is so pleased! xx It is such a beautiful and challenging piece of theatre, with hugely complex characters and a very dark centre, and I really cannot wait to get started.
It's really interesting, but Carousel was one of my very first shows in Community Theatre (or Amateur Dramatics in the UK). I was a little 12 year old ballerina at the time, and played Louise! I became utterly obsessed with the piece, with musical theatre, (and I fell hopelessly in love with the boy playing the Carnival Boy in the Dream Ballet to boot! ha!) It meant so much to me that I even kept the script with my 12-year-old scrawl still held within it's pages.
Anyway, it's funny how life comes so full circle sometimes.
Yay! Alex is heading back to London! Congratulations. But how will we here on the left bank do without you? Oh well, break a leg anyway.
ReplyDeleteYay! That code image you gave...I guessed right! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteYay!!! I heard rumors about this! So exciting, I love the music!
ReplyDeletespoke to ruthie about it last night and she was like "bloomin marvelous!"
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm looking forward to seeing what you bring to my favourite heroine... I KNEW I was right!

Hi Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteI went to watch Carousel in Milton Keynes with my husband and was really impressed. I'm putting an article on Suite101 about it and here's the link:

Seriously I thought you were really good. Keep up the good work. Your performance brought tears to my eyes.
Lynette.
